Indoor Air Pollution

Common Sources of Indoor Air Pollution in your Home or Building

  • People.  70-90% of what you see floating in a ray of sunshine entering your home is dead human skin flakes. And remember, we can only see about 10% of the airborne pollutants. Dead human skin is a staple of the dust mite diet.
  • Dust.  House dust is a mixture of diverse substances that can cause allergies. House dust is composed of a number of natural substances, including dried food particles, mold spores, pollen, fabric fibers, animal dander, and insect parts, especially those of dust mites and cockroaches. However, particles and debris from dust mites are the major source of allergens in dust. As is the case with other allergens, these particles contain proteins that are small enough to become airborne and inhaled.
  • Allergens Pollens, ragweed, and a variety of other allergens find their way into the home from outdoors.
  • Carpet, Plywood, and other Construction Materials. The “new” smell associated with new carpet, newly painted walls, new home, remodeled room, etc. is actually the out-gassing of the chemical solutions used to treat these products. These are known an VOCs.
  • Pillows and Blankets.  Dust mites comprise over 50% of the weight of the average pillow. Dust mite allergy is an allergic reaction to tiny bugs that commonly live in house dust. Signs of dust mite allergy include sneezing and runny nose. Many people with dust mite allergy also experience signs of asthma, such as wheezing and difficulty breathing.
  • HVAC Systems Air ducts serve as a fertile breeding ground for mold spores.
  • Household Cleaners/Aerosols, Insecticides, Pesticides. We literally poison the air we breathe with chemical fumes and toxins when we use these products.
  • Moist things or humid environments. Mold spores, bacteria, and mildew thrive in dampened towels, wash cloths, and moist or humid areas of the home. Children in homes with high mold show persistent, cold-like symptoms – 300% more than average.
  • Pets Airborne animal and/or pet dander (dried spit from the animal that breaks off the end of their hair and floats in air since they are so small) is a common trigger for allergies and asthma. Plus, the feces from your pet emits added contaminates into the air.
  • Insects and other Bugs Insects and bugs feces are a powerful allergen. In a recent extensive study by the New England Journal of Medicine, more than half the homes tested had high levels of cockroaches. Children living in these homes were more than three times as likely to be hospitalized for asthma.
  • Smoking. Smoking in the home or vehicle leaves the air being breathed dense with over 3600 cancer-causing toxins. These toxins also cling to the clothing we wear, and release themselves when we enter other homes and buildings.

Chicken Coop Cleaning

Chicken Coop Cleaning

As spring approaches in Grand Rapids, the time is here to do a good cleaning and disinfecting of your chicken coop. This is especially important if you are considering bringing in new birds or replacing your flock. Decontaminating your coop is crucial in order to prevent diseases and other poultry health problems.

The first step to getting the chicken coop ready is to begin by airing the coop out as well as you can and then raking or shoveling out the old bedding. If you are sensitive to smells and chicken fluff, you may benefit from wearing a mask. This is another good reason (second to your flock’s well-being) to tackle chicken coop cleaning before the ammonia smell builds. Once most of the bedding is out, you can sweep the remaining bits out with a broom.

Then you are ready to clean. EcoVive of Grand Rapids provides an all-natural, non-chemical cleaning and sanitizing service for chicken growers in Grand Rapids that will make this job much faster, and more effective.

Using chemicals, like bleach to clean and disinfect your chicken coop can have disastrous effects on a flock. Chickens are very susceptible to respiratory illnesses and cleaning a coop with harsh chemicals can cause problems.

With the use of our Liquid Ozone machine we can perform a chicken coop cleaning without the use of chemicals. The Liquid Ozone will not only clean, but it disinfects and removes odors at the same time. After the coop has been cleaned and dried, we can run our high output Ozone generators to totally disinfect the coop. With the use of the ozone gas, every nook and cranny in the coop will be disinfected.

If you raise chickens at your home in Grand Rapids and are looking for a better way to clean and disinfect your coop, give us a call today. We would love to help you.

Medical office sanitizing

Protecting medical offices from C.diff

As C. Difficile (C.diff) becomes a serious problem in doctor offices, health clinics and dental offices, now is the time for a better approach to combating these threats.  The normal cleaning taking place in the medical offices is not protecting the patients from C. diff. and other viruses and bacteria.

“C.difficile was responsible for almost half a million infections and was associated with approximately 29,000 deaths in 2011”, as reported in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Creating Healthy Indoor environments in medical offices should be a top priority for all those involved. Having a cleaning company take care of the day to day cleaning is important, but it is not enough. This is being proven by the increase in C. diff. cases that are showing up outside of hospitals. Employing a company that can provide sanitizing services is the next step in providing a safe place for your customers.

Bio-Sanitizing With Ozone

Sanitizing is the normal and natural duty for ozone.

Nearly 100 years ago, it was discovered that ozone is the second most powerful sterilant in the world.  It is 3000 more effective than chlorine in water.  Ozone is 2.5 times better than bleach as a germicide.  The trouble is it cannot be bottled or sold as a commodity by chemical distributors.

Used as both a gas and liquid, ozone can clean and sanitize medical offices very efficiently.

Ozone attacks bacteria and viruses by destroying the outer membrane.  There is no defense as the gas penetrates throughout the building, and the liquid ozone is used to clean all hard surfaces.  Medical facilities are pleased to know that there is no residue or VOCs created by this process.

In addition to the normal cleaning, concerned organizations will treat their facilities once a month or once a quarter to reduce the growing concerns for infections.

Bacteria cannot mutate to avoid ozone attacks.  It kills germs with the same effect the first time and the hundredth time.EcoVive Sanitizing

Antimicrobial surface treatment

There is a huge need to revisit our sanitizing processes that are not working.  Bleach is not the ultimate solution. It is high in VOC causing later-life health issues, and it does not provide a 24/7 kind of proactive microbial barrier that is desperately needed. Antimicrobial surface treatments are the proactive choice.  If a facility waits for diseases to strike before offering a response, the cost and threat are huge.

BioZone Protectant is one of the leading antimicrobial coatings that allows quick application of an EPA approved antimicrobial surface treatment with the ability to inhibit disease for three to six months.  BioZone Protectant is non-toxic, non-transferable, and non-leaching once dried. It is easily applied to soft or hard surfaces.  It can be applied on smooth or porous surfaces as well.  It does not require light to activate it.  BioZone Protectant works 24/7 to fight pathogenic microbes even though it is a nanotechnology process that is unseen.

Schedule a consultation with our certified odor specialist.  We will map out a program that will provide the triple punch that will keep your facility and your clients safe.

Dangers of cleaning chemicals

Dangers of household cleaners

Cleaning is essential to protecting our health in our homes, schools and places of work. However, cleaning products often include harmful chemicals. Even products that are advertised as “green” or “natural” may contain ingredients that can cause health problems.

When consumers buy cleaning products, we expect them to do one thing: Clean!  We use many different scents, soaps, detergents; bleaching agents and specialized cleaners for bathrooms, kitchens, glass and floors to keep our homes sparkling and sweet smelling. While the chemicals in the cleaners foam, bleach, and disinfect to make our floors, countertops, dishes, bathrooms clean and germ-free, they also contribute to indoor air pollution, are poisonous if ingested, and can be harmful if touched or inhaled.

Many cleaning products can irritate the eyes or the throat or cause headaches or other health problems. Many products release volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs and other chemicals released when using cleaning supplies contribute to chronic respiratory problems, allergic reactions and headaches.

When we use chemicals on a regular basis they become part of our home environment. According to the EPA, indoor air is 2 to 5 times more contaminated than outdoor air. Not only do these chemicals pollute the air that we breathe inside, they leach onto our counter tops, floors, carpets, bathtubs, sinks, and walls. We also absorb them into our bodies when they come in contact with our skin. Without our concern, our homes have become toxic environments. Regularly breathing, smelling, and touching these chemicals puts our own health at risk, not to mention the health of spouses, children, and even pets.

Just because we find these products on the supermarket shelves doesn’t mean they are tested for safety. Many of the ingredients in the cleaners are not listed on the container. Mostly because they are “trade” secrets to that companies cleaners.  After forty years of using chemical cleaners, we are beginning to connect asthma, cancer, nervous system disorders, and other diseases to their household use.

Green cleaning with Liquid Ozone

Because of the advertising, and how easy it is to purchase and use chemical cleaners, most people don’t think twice of the dangers.  Today there are companies that manufacture truly “green” cleaners that are much safer. One of the not so new, but just becoming more and more available for the home is Liquid Ozone.  While liquid Ozone is not the silver bullet for all cleaning needs in a home, it will replace most of the cleaners that are purchased.  Liquid Ozone is no more than oxygen and water. But, it is an amazing cleaner and disinfectant.  There are units for washing machines that will clean clothes, units that can be mounted with a faucet that will allow you to wash fruits, vegetables and meat. You can also fill spray bottles, and mop buckets to use for all your cleaning and disinfecting needs.

When you switch to a truly green cleaning practice in your home, you will eliminate the dangers to your health from the chemicals and help protect the environment at the same time.

Kennel Disinfection and Sanitizing

Kennel Disinfection and Sanitizing

Pet Odor Removal

Providing the best Disinfection and Sanitizing service for your kennel or Dog Day care is our number one goal. It is extremely important to have a visibly clean and odor-free place where pet owners can leave a family member for a day, a week, or a month without any concerns for their health and well-being. Creating a healthy environment for your guests depends greatly in part on how well you clean and sanitize.

Since kennel owners naturally want their kennels to be clean, disinfected, and odor-free, kennels are subjected to frequent cleanings with a variety of harsh chemicals.

Prevention and Control of Animal Disease and illness in kennels and dog Day cares can incorporate a number of activities. Vaccination is great way to protect animals from potential infection. The downside to vaccinations is they may not always prevent the animal from contracting the disease it was vaccinated against. Another issue with vaccines is that they are not available for many illnesses which animals may be exposed to. As with human infections in health care settings, the incorporation of multiple prevention measures needs to be implemented in kennels and Dog Day care settings. This would include the addition of an effective disinfection program to go along with the normal cleaning and proper animal handling procedures.

A problem which impacts many animal handling facilities is the fact that many of the buildings are quite large, making disinfection a huge task. Another issue is the limited manpower available to perform needed disinfection, and the danger of using harmful chemicals. Because of the factors mentioned above, ozone technology may prove to be a valuable disinfection tool. Ozone is not only an effective broad spectrum antimicrobial but because it is can be used in gaseous and liquid form it can give a complete coverage of all surfaces.

In veterinary hospitals / clinics, animal labs, pet shops, zoos and kennels, Ozone not only kills parvovirus, it acts as a fungicide, virucide, disinfectant and sanitizer, eliminating odors so well that the presence of animals is hardly even noticeable.

EcoVive provides kennel and Dog Daycare center disinfecting and sanitizing for owners that want to provide the best for their guests.

Flu protection

Flu Protection Cascade, MI

The Flu Season is ramping up in West Michigan, and we are heading into the time of year where sanitizing is an important step to preventing disease.

With reports that the Flu virus has mutated, and the flu shot may not protect some people from the virus, many are using store bought “chemicals” to keep their home or office germ and virus free. But, knowing that bacteria can mutate and become immune to many cleaning or sanitizing ingredients, we are fighting a losing battle when we dump more and more cleaning products on the problem.

EcoVive offers a solution to the germ and virus problem without the use of harmful chemicals. And, the virus and bacteria cannot build up immunity to it. With the use of Ozone we can eliminate bacteria, germs, viruses and odors from all surfaces.

Bacteria CANNOT DEVELOP IMMUNITY to ozone.  Why?  Ozone is just another form of oxygen, and bacteria cannot become immune to oxygen, they need oxygen or they will die.  So, we have those disease monsters just where we want them

Ozone is a fantastic sterilant.  After all the FDA approves ozone for meat and food distributors to kill bacteria and mold.  EPA recognizes ozone as a highly-effective sterilant.  There are more than 1000 water plants using ozone to purify and sanitize there water systems.  Frankly, ozone is heavily used in many industrial applications because of its sterilizing power.  It also leaves no toxic residue, harmful hormones, and is quite affordable.

If you are worried about all the germs and viruses that are attacking us now, and do not want to use harmful chemicals, it’s time to talk with EcoVive. We have a far better solution by applying ozone after people have vacated the building.

While ozone is a great way to sanitize your facility, a secondary Green treatment will allow the germ-killing action to last throughout the whole flu season. After an Ozone treatment to kill the germs and viruses in the home or office, we can apply an Antimicrobial surface treatment.  Reduce the cost and agony of contagious diseases by calling EcoVive today. 616-401-9176

Indoor Playground Cleaning and Sanitizing

Playground Cleaning and Sanitizing

Playground cleaning and sanitizing

Your playground is like a magnet to kids eager for fun. And it gives parents hungry for relaxation a time to unwind.

Unfortunately, it is also a harbor for microorganisms, including those that contribute to foodborne illness. On the playground, bacteria, fungi, and viruses pass from the kids hands to play equipment, to other hands, onto food and into mouths.

With children acting as they do—eating, playing, eating and playing some more—ensuring that playground equipment is properly cleaned and sanitized or disinfected is a critical component in providing a safe and inviting experience for both the children and adults. Taking steps to encourage customer hand hygiene before and after playground use will also help keep children and parents healthy.

“Effective playground cleanliness requires cleaning, rinsing, and sanitizing or disinfecting equipment surfaces,” says Gina McDowell, Food Safety Technical Consultant at Ecolab.

Cleaning of the playground equipment removes the visible dirt and other residues from surfaces and reduces the total microorganism count.

Sanitizing helps reduce the count of a variety of potentially harmful microorganisms. Disinfecting provides an extra layer of protection by totally eliminating them, including hard-to-kill viruses. But with any sanitizing program, as soon as a surface is contacted by a germ or virus it has been compromised. That is why we apply an Antimicrobial surface treatment that will ensure that the surfaces, both porous and non-porous are protected against the introduction of germs and viruses.

By employing Ozonated water to clean with, not only is the equipment cleaned and sanitized, but no harmful chemicals are left behind. Nothing but water and oxygen.

Many cleaning products and procedures being used to clean playground equipment use bleach as the main ingredient for their sanitizing steps. There are many dangers to using bleach on playground equipment that children climb all over.

Residue left over from chlorine bleach may cause:

  • Ingestion of bleach causes corrosive damage to the tissues of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • It increases asthma and allergy symptoms because of the likelihood of inhalation. It can also cause wheezing, bronchospasm and sometimes noncardiogenic pulmonary edema (a lung condition that prevents enough oxygen from entering the blood).

EcoVive offers a safe, eco-friendly way to keeping playground equipment safe, and sanitized that is both good for our children and our environment.

Animal Sanitation Services West Michigan

EcoVive

Animal Sanitation Services

Maintaining good environmental conditions for animal holding and housing facilities is often a difficult issue to overcome. In most facilities, there is a continuous animal turnover thus resulting in a condition known as disease build-up. Trying to maintain an infection free animal shelter can be nearly impossible considering the dirt and feces that can be present throughout the facility. And trying to accomplish animal sanitation services with employees that are already very busy taking care of the animals, becomes something that is done in a hurry.   It has been well documented that treatment rooms and kennel areas have high levels of viruses and bacteria. In fact, canine infectious tracheobronchitis (also referred to as kennel cough) is one of the most prevalent infectious diseases in dogs. Kennel cough is most commonly associated with a bacterial infection caused by the organism Bordetella bronchiseptica.

EcoVive of Grand Rapids offers a treatment program that will significantly reduce the viral and bacterial infections spreading throughout kennels, play rooms, grooming rooms and waiting rooms, solving a major problem boarding, breeding and veterinary hospital facilities face.

With the use of Ozone in both gaseous and liquid form as Ozonated water, we are able to not only eliminate viruses and bacteria from the facility, we can wash down all hard surface areas to remove any urine stains, smells and any mold, mildew or bacteria present.  Additionally, our treatment program will eliminate unpleasant odors, improving the quality of air for those who work with pets, as well as creating clean, fresh, healthy air to greet your clients when they enter your business.

Disease causing bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasite eggs accumulate in these types of environments and can become immune to improperly applied disinfectants, thus making transmission of disease easier to the animals being housed.

EcoVive uses Ozone Technology that has proven to be a valuable disinfection tool. Ozone is an effective broad spectrum antimicrobial. Ozone is more effective than chlorine and byproducts and can deactivate chlorine-resistant pathogens.

Providing a safer, and more effective Animal Sanitation Service for all animal daycare, boarding houses, and vet clinics throughout wet Michigan.
